Which Socks Should I Choose?

Hemp & Bamboo Sock Guide
Your sock drawer, sorted.

Socks are supposed to be simple — until you’re choosing between work socks, hiking socks, sports socks, business socks, no-shows, extra-thick socks and the pair you just want to wear with absolutely everything.

The truth is, the “best” sock depends very much on what you’re asking it to do.

A work boot, a business shoe, a hiking trail and a Pilates reformer are all asking something completely different of your feet.

And while we obviously love talking about hemp and bamboo fibres, choosing a good sock isn’t just about the fibre on the label. Thickness, cushioning, sock height, shoe fit and even how firmly the top sits around your ankle can matter just as much.

So rather than making you compare a dozen product pages, here’s the Made In Hemp guide to finding your pair.

Just tell me which socks to buy

We respect that. Here’s the fast version.

Everyday

Hemp Cotton Socks

Our all-rounder and a particularly strong online favourite. Classic, simple and easy to wear with work shoes, casual shoes or while travelling.

Heavy Boots

Extra Thick Bamboo Work Socks

Choose these when cushioning and thickness are the priority: work boots, gumboots, cold mornings and long days standing.

Lighter Work

3-Yarn Work Socks

A lighter work-sock option that takes up less room in your boot and dries more quickly than the extra-thick style.

Walking

Bamboo Charcoal Hiking Socks

Lightweight boot socks with mid-foot support for walking, hiking or long days when you want less bulk.

Sport

Ankle or Crew Sports Socks

Cushioned options for trainers, gym sessions, running and sport. Choose the height you prefer.

No Tight Band

Circulation Health Socks

The gentler choice when ordinary sock tops feel too firm or tend to leave uncomfortable marks around the ankle.

The Everyday Favourite

Hemp Cotton Socks

There’s a reason these humble socks quietly became one of our strongest online sellers.

They’re not trying to be a hiking sock, running sock or ultra-padded work sock. They’re simply a very useful everyday hemp sock.

The hemp and cotton blend has a fine vertical rib through the leg and the neat profile of a traditional business sock, but it works just as comfortably for casual wear, travel and general everyday use.

Choose these if...

  • You specifically want hemp in your socks.
  • You prefer a finer everyday sock rather than heavy cushioning.
  • You want something versatile enough for work and casual shoes.
  • You’re looking for a simple natural-fibre wardrobe staple.

Want hemp, but with more cushioning?

Hemp Crew

High Standards Hemp Socks – 2 Pair Pack

The High Standards socks take hemp in a more casual, substantial direction. They’re a classic crew-height sock with a ribbed upper and cushioned sole, using a blend of certified organic hemp and cotton with a little stretch.

They’re a better match than our finer Hemp Cotton Socks if you want a chunkier crew style for sneakers, skating, casual wear or active days.

Which socks are best for work boots?

This mostly comes down to one question: how much sock do you want inside your boot?

Extra Thick Work Socks

Go here when maximum cushioning is what you’re after. The thicker bamboo-rich construction adds plenty of padding underfoot and suits roomy work boots, gumboots, hiking boots and cooler conditions.

Shop Extra Thick

3-Yarn Work Socks

The 3-yarn version is deliberately a little lighter. That makes it a great everyday work option if your boots are already snug, you run warm or you want something that dries more quickly.

Boot fit matters.
A thicker sock isn’t automatically better. If your footwear is already close-fitting, adding too much sock can make the whole setup less comfortable. Sometimes the lighter option is exactly the right one.

For hiking and walking: support without all the bulk

Our Bamboo Charcoal Hiking Socks sit neatly between a standard everyday sock and our heavier work styles.

They have a mid-foot support panel designed to help the sock sit securely around the foot, while remaining noticeably thinner than the Extra Thick Work Socks.

That makes them a useful crossover pair for hiking boots, walking shoes or work boots when you want cushioning and coverage without filling every spare millimetre of your footwear.

For sport: ankle, crew or grip?

Here the activity matters — but so does your deeply personal position in the ongoing ankle-sock-versus-crew-sock debate.

Gym & Running

Bamboo Ankle Sports Socks

A lower-profile sports sock with cushioning through the sole and reinforcement around high-wear areas. Great with trainers when you want performance without a full crew height.

Classic Crew

Bamboo Crew Sports Socks

Similar sporting intent, more sock. The crew height works nicely with trainers, sports footwear and boots and gives you more coverage around the ankle and lower leg.

Pilates & Yoga

Bamboo Yoga Grip Socks

The specialist of the group. Non-slip grips underneath make these the obvious choice for Pilates, yoga, studio classes or even slippery floors at home.

Bare-Ankle Look

Bamboo No-Show Socks

For trainers, loafers and lower-cut shoes when you want the comfort of a sock but not the look of one. An anti-slip heel grip helps keep them from disappearing down inside your shoe.

Shop No-Show Socks

For work shoes and business wear

If you need something finer under a dress shoe, there are two easy directions.

Hemp Cotton Socks

Choose these if hemp is the priority. Their classic ribbed profile is tidy enough for business trousers but relaxed enough to become an everyday sock outside work too.

Bamboo Comfort Business Socks

Choose these when you want a lightweight business profile with a little extra cushioning through the areas that spend all day inside your shoes.

What if normal sock tops feel too tight?

Sometimes fibre and cushioning aren’t the main issue at all. It’s the elastic around the top.

Our Bamboo Charcoal Circulation Health Socks are designed with a looser, non-restrictive top band, making them worth considering if ordinary socks tend to feel overly firm or leave uncomfortable pressure around the ankle.

They’re about a gentler fit rather than trying to turn a sock into a medical device — which, we think, is an important distinction.

So... should I choose hemp socks or bamboo socks?

We’re going to disappoint anyone hoping for a dramatic HEMP vs BAMBOO: FIGHT!

For socks, neither fibre automatically wins.

Our hemp blends tend to feature in classic everyday and crew-style socks, while our bamboo range gives us much more variation in cushioning, thickness and specialist styles such as work, hiking, sport, grip and no-show socks.

The better approach is to decide what you need the sock to do first, then look at the fibre.

Start with the shoe, not the sock.
Are you putting it inside a snug business shoe, roomy work boot, trainer, hiking boot or nothing at all for Pilates? Once you know that, the choice gets considerably easier.

Five things to think about before choosing

  • Thickness: how much room is actually available inside your shoe or boot?
  • Cushioning: do you want substantial padding or a finer everyday feel?
  • Height: no-show, ankle or crew?
  • Activity: office, worksite, trail, gym or couch?
  • Top-band fit: do you like a secure ribbed sock or need something gentler around the ankle?

The right sock is the one you stop thinking about

Really, that’s the goal.

Your socks shouldn’t be sliding into your shoe, squeezing your ankles, bunching inside a boot or making you regret getting dressed that morning.

Whether your pair ends up being hemp, bamboo, extra thick, nearly invisible or equipped with grips for a reformer class, choose the construction that fits the job.

And if you’re still stuck between two styles, ask us. After more than a decade selling hemp and bamboo clothing, we have developed opinions about socks.
