From Diagnosis to Recovery: Darius’ Story of Cancer, Cannabis and Finding Steady Ground

A personal story from Made In Hemp founder Darius Dunn

It is one thing to talk about hemp, cannabis and plant-based support in theory. It is another thing to have lived through a serious diagnosis, major surgery, recovery and the long emotional road that follows.

Our founder, Darius Dunn, understands that difference deeply. His personal experience with cancer, recovery and prescribed medicinal cannabis is one of the quiet driving forces behind Made In Hemp.

This is not a story about miracle cures. It is not medical advice. It is one person’s lived experience — shared with care, honesty and the hope that it may help others feel less alone.

Important Information
Made In Hemp is licensed to grow industrial hemp in Australia. Current Australian legislation limits what we can say, promote, or supply online in relation to medicinal cannabis, CBD and cannabis-derived products.

A note on personal stories

This article shares Darius’ personal experience only. Everyone’s health journey is different, and no personal story should be read as medical advice, treatment guidance or a promise of outcome.

A life-altering diagnosis

Several years ago, Darius was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in his pancreas — a rare and often quiet type of cancer that can be difficult to detect early.

Like any life-changing diagnosis, it changed everything in an instant. Suddenly, life became appointments, scans, decisions, uncertainty and trying to understand what the road ahead might look like.

Thankfully, the tumour was operable. Darius underwent a Whipple procedure, also known as a pancreaticoduodenectomy — a major abdominal surgery that can involve removing part of the pancreas, small intestine, bile duct, gallbladder and sometimes part of the stomach, followed by reconstruction of the digestive system.

The surgery was successful, but recovery was not simple. Major surgery can affect the body and mind in ways that are hard to understand until you are living through it. For Darius, the months and years that followed required patience, support, resilience and a deep respect for the body’s ability to recover slowly.

The long road after surgery

Recovery from cancer and major abdominal surgery is not just a single moment of “getting better.” It can be a long, uneven process.

For Darius, that process included physical discomfort, disrupted sleep, stress, anxiety and the emotional weight of everything he had been through.

There were also the everyday realities of trying to return to life, family, work and purpose while carrying the memory of what had happened. Anyone who has faced a serious diagnosis, or supported someone through one, knows that recovery is rarely only physical.

This is where Darius’ interest in cannabis became deeply personal.

Where prescribed medicinal cannabis fitted into his recovery

Under medical guidance, Darius explored prescribed medicinal cannabis as part of his broader recovery support.

This was not about replacing conventional treatment. It was not about treating cancer. It was about support after diagnosis, surgery and treatment — at a time when rest, comfort, nervous system regulation and quality of life mattered deeply.

Darius has described prescribed cannabis tinctures containing cannabinoids such as THC, CBD, CBG and CBN as one part of the support that helped him get through some of the hardest days after surgery.

For him, the experience was meaningful. It helped shape the way he thinks about cannabis, not as a cure-all, but as a plant with real complexity, deep history and a place in serious conversations about patient support, quality of life and compassionate care.

Personal experience, not a treatment claim

Darius’ story is his own. It should not be read as a recommendation for any specific product, cannabinoid, dose or treatment pathway. Medicinal cannabis decisions should always be discussed with a qualified health professional.

Five years on

Today, five years on from surgery, Darius has shared that he has received a clean bill of health.

That milestone is something he does not take lightly. It carries gratitude, perspective and a deeper understanding of how fragile and resilient life can be at the same time.

For Darius, cannabis did not replace medicine, surgery, medical care or monitoring. But prescribed medicinal cannabis was part of his personal recovery story — one that helped him think differently about the plant, the body, patient experience and the need for more open, informed conversations in Australia.

Why this story matters to Made In Hemp

Made In Hemp has always been personal.

Long before the wider cannabis conversation became more mainstream, we were already working with hemp through skincare, food, textiles, education and customer conversations. But Darius’ health journey added another layer to that work.

It deepened our respect for the cannabis plant as a whole. It strengthened our belief that education matters. And it reinforced something we hear from customers all the time: people do not just want hype, fear or confusing legal language. They want honest information, lived experience and guidance that treats them like adults.

This experience is not used as a marketing story. It is a quiet truth behind the brand. It is part of why we care so much about hemp, CBD, medicinal cannabis education, plant-based innovation and clearer pathways for Australians.

A personal mission, not a miracle claim

Darius will be the first to say this is just his story.

What supported him may not be right for someone else. Every diagnosis, surgery, recovery and medical situation is different. But personal stories still matter, because they remind us that behind every policy debate, product category or scientific paper, there are real people trying to find comfort, clarity and hope.

That is why we believe the conversation around hemp and cannabis needs to be more mature, more compassionate and more honest.

Not exaggerated. Not fear-based. Not hidden behind stigma.

Just clearer, kinder and better informed.
