We at Made In Hemp are all about being as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible - I mean we are a hemp company after all! But what does that mean when it comes to your orders being wrapped and sent out?
Is it sustainable for us to purchase packing materials - like eco bubble wrap or tissue paper for example - when we could just reuse other plastic packing options that come in from our clothing suppliers?
Yes it would be great if our entire supply chain was plastic free - but for some of our suppliers this just isn't an option (trust us - we checked). Therefore a lot of the clothing arrives to our stores is in a soft plastic pouch to protect the items during transit. So for us it just makes sense that we use that same plastic to wrap your orders in. Once you receive your order from us we encourage you to recycle in any REDcycle bin around Australia, where it can be used to produce a huge range of recycled-plastic products, from fitness circuits to sturdy outdoor furniture, to bollards, signage and more. They will even recycle bubble wrap!
And depending on where you are in Australia, you may find that your parcel will now arrive in a Hero Post Satchel. These mail bags are 100% home compostable! To compost them at home, it’s best to cut them up and place in your compost bin (as “brown” materials). These will completely break down within 90 days in a compostable environment.
Alternatively, you can send these mailbags to landfill, where they still break down (with no waste and no methane production) in landfill. It takes about 2 years rather than 90 days. In contrast, traditional plastic shipping mailers take 400 years or more to break down, and release deadly methane gas into the atmosphere.
